Exercise 12, § 3

Integration, IX, p. 111

Let X be a set, U\mathscr{U} a subset of P(X)\mathscr{P}(X), and mm the characteristic function of U\mathscr{U}. For mm to be a gauge, it is necessary and sufficient that U\mathscr{U} be an ultrafilter and that the intersection of every countable subset of U\mathscr{U} belong to U\mathscr{U}. Under these conditions, U\mathscr{U} is said to be an Ulam ultrafilter on X. Suppose that this is the case, and that (Hi)i∈I(H_i)_{i \in I} is a family of elements of U\mathscr{U} such that Card(I)\mathrm{Card}(I) is an Ulam cardinal; show that ⋂i∈IHi\bigcap_{i \in I} H_i belongs to U\mathscr{U}.
