Exercise 3, § 3

Integration, IX, p. 109

Let E be a set and T\mathscr{T} a tribe of subsets of E. Denote by M\mathscr{M} the set of mappings f of E into R‾+\overline{\mathbf{R}}_+ such that the set of x∈Ex \in E for which f(x)≥cf(x) \geq c belongs to T\mathscr{T} for every c∈R‾+c \in \overline{\mathbf{R}}_+.

a) Show that the limit superior and limit inferior of every sequence of elements of M\mathscr{M} belong to M\mathscr{M} (first study sequences that are increasing or decreasing).

b) Show that T\mathscr{T} is the set of subsets of E whose characteristic function belongs to M\mathscr{M}.

c) Let f∈Mf \in \mathscr{M}. For every Borel subset B of R‾+\overline{\mathbf{R}}_+, the set f−1(B)f^{-1}(B) belongs to T\mathscr{T} (the set of subsets B of R‾+\overline{\mathbf{R}}_+ such that f−1(B)∈Tf^{-1}(B) \in \mathscr{T} is a tribe, containing the intervals [c,+∞][c, +\infty]).

d) Let f1,…,fnf_1, \ldots, f_n be in M\mathscr{M} and let φ\varphi be a Borel mapping of (R‾+)n(\overline{\mathbf{R}}_+)^n into R‾+\overline{\mathbf{R}}_+; show that the mapping x↦φ(f1(x),…,fn(x))x \mapsto \varphi(f_1(x), \ldots, f_n(x)) of E into R‾+\overline{\mathbf{R}}_+ belongs to M\mathscr{M}. Deduce from this that M\mathscr{M} contains the sum of every series of elements of M\mathscr{M}.

e) Show that M\mathscr{M} is the set of limits of increasing sequences of finite positive T\mathscr{T}-step functions.
