Exercise 7, § 3

Integration, IX, p. 110

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let TT be a topological space, Φ\Phi a clan of subsets of TT, and mm a relatively bounded additive mapping (cf. Exer. 1) of Φ\Phi into R\mathbf{R}. Assume that there exists an open covering U\mathscr{U} of TT such that Φ\Phi consists of the Borel subsets of TT contained in the union of a finite number of elements of U\mathscr{U}. Assume, moreover, that for every A∈ΦA \in \Phi and every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there exist a compact subset KK of TT and an open subset UU of TT such that K⊂A⊂UK \subset A \subset U, U∈ΦU \in \Phi and ∣m∣(U−K)<ε|m|(U - K) < \varepsilon. Show that there exists a measure μ\mu on TT (not necessarily positive) such that m(A)=μ∗(A)m(A) = \mu^*(A) for all A∈ΦA \in \Phi, and that such a measure μ\mu is unique (on introducing the decomposition m=m+−m−m = m_+ - m_- of Exer. 1 c), reduce to the case that mm takes positive values; first treat the case that T∈ΦT \in \Phi and observe that mm is then inner regular; finally, treat the general case by pasting together measures).
