Exercise 1, § 4

Integration, V, p. 99

Let T and X be two compact spaces, π\pi a continuous mapping of T into X, and gg a continuous and finite numerical function defined on T. For every x∈Xx \in X, let f(x)f(x) be the infimum of g(t)g(t) on the set π−1(x)\pi^{-1}(x). Give an example where ff is not continuous. (Take T=[0,1]T = [0,1] in R\mathbf{R}, and for π\pi the canonical mapping of T onto the quotient space X obtained by identifying 0 and 1 in T.)
