Exercise 10, § 5

Integration, V, p. 100

a) Let μ\mu be a diffuse positive measure ≠0\neq 0 on a locally compact space TT. Show that there exists in L1(T,μ)\mathscr{L}^1(T, \mu) a sequence of functions fnf_n such that N1(fn)=1N_1(f_n) = 1 for all nn and such that the sequence of diffuse measures fn⋅μf_n \cdot \mu converges vaguely to a point measure εa\varepsilon_a. From this, deduce that L1(T,μ)L^1(T, \mu) (hence also L∞(T,μ)L^\infty(T, \mu)) is not reflexive.

b) Let ν\nu be an atomic positive measure on TT, whose support is infinite. Let AA be the smallest set carrying ν\nu, BB a countable infinite subset of AA, and λ\lambda the measure φB⋅ν\varphi_B \cdot \nu. Show that the dual of L∞(T,λ)L^\infty(T, \lambda) is not separable, hence cannot be isomorphic to L1(T,λ)L^1(T, \lambda) (cf. TVS, I, §2, Exer. 1).

c) Deduce from a) and b) that, for a positive measure μ\mu on a locally compact space TT to be such that L1(T,μ)L^1(T, \mu) is reflexive, it is necessary and sufficient that the support of μ\mu be finite (make use of Exer. 9).
