Exercise 16, § 5
Integration, V, p. 103
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
a) Let be a sequence of functions in . Show that the following conditions are equivalent:
α) The sequence is convergent in for the weakened topology .
β) The set of is relatively compact in for the weakened topology, and the sequence of measures converges vaguely in .
γ) For every open subset of , the sequence of numbers is convergent in .
(To prove that β) implies α), use criterion α) of Exer. 15 and the definition of measurable function. To prove that γ) implies β), consider first the special case of the space (for the discrete measure defined by the mass +1 at each point) using Exer. 15 of TVS, IV, §2. In the general case, apply the criterion ζ) of Exer. 15 to reduce to the case of , by associating to each the summable sequence .)
b) Deduce from these results that, in , every Cauchy sequence for the weakened topology is convergent for that topology.
c) On the interval , let be Lebesgue measure and, for every integer , let be the measure defined by the mass at each of the points (); let be a positive measure on such that , (Exer. 4 b)). Show that the sequence converges vaguely to , tends to for every finite subset of and for every open set such that the measure induced by on the boundary of has finite support, but that does not tend to for all of the open sets (cf. Exer. 13 b)).
