Bourbaki

Exercise 22, § 5

Integration, V, p. 105

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

In the Banach space E=M1(T)E = \mathscr{M}^1(T) of bounded measures on a locally compact space TT, let HH be a compact set for the weakened topology.

a) Show that, for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there exists a positive measure με\mu_\varepsilon on TT such that every measure ν∈H\nu \in H is the sum of a positive measure with base με\mu_\varepsilon and a measure λ\lambda alien to με\mu_\varepsilon and of norm ≤ε\leq \varepsilon. (Make use of the fact that the space EE, equipped with its norm and its order structure, is isomorphic to a space L1(S,ρ)L^1(S, \rho), where SS is the union of compact Stone spaces and ρ\rho is a positive measure on SS (Ch. IV, §4, Exer. 10), and apply in L1(S,ρ)L^1(S, \rho) the criterion α1\alpha_1 of Exer. 15.)

b) Deduce from a) that there exists a positive measure μ\mu on TT such that all of the measures ν∈H\nu \in H have base μ\mu (use Exer. 4 b)).
