Let μ1,…,μm be a finite number of measures on a locally compact space T, which one can write in the form μk=fk⋅μ, where μ is a measure ≥0 and ∣fk∣≤1 (No. 9).
a) Let Φ be a set of functions defined and positively homogeneous on Rm and such that u(f1,…,fm) is locally μ-integrable for every function u∈Φ. Show that if a sequence (un) of functions in Φ converges uniformly on every compact subset of Rm to a function u, then u(μ1,…,μm) is the limit of the sequence of measures un(μ1,…,μm) for the quasi-strong topology on M(T) (Ch. III, §1, Exer. 8).
b) Suppose that u∈Φ is continuous on Rm. Show that the mapping
(μ1,…,μm)↦u(μ1,…,μm)
of (M(T))m into M(T) is continuous for the quasi-strong topology (begin by considering the case that u is Lipschitz; then use a) and the Stone–Weierstrass theorem).
c) Suppose that u is continuous on Rm. Let g be any function in H(T), and K its support. For every ε>0, show that there exists a finite open covering (Ai) of K formed of relatively compact sets, such that for every finite open covering (Bj) of K, finer than (Ai), and for every family (hj) of continuous mappings of T into [0,1] such that hj has its support in Bj and such that ∑jhj(t)=1 on K, one has
(consider first the case that u is Lipschitz and the fk are continuous, then pass to the case that u is Lipschitz and the fk are locally integrable, and finally the general case using the Stone–Weierstrass theorem).
d) In R2, let u(x1,x2) be the positively homogeneous function equal to x12+x22 when x1/x2 is irrational, and to 0 in the contrary case. Let μ be Lebesgue measure on T=[0,1], and let ν be the measure on T defined by dν(t)=tdμ(t). Show that if g is a continuous function ≥0 on T, then ∑ju(∫ghjdμ,∫ghjdν) does not tend to any limit with respect to the directed set of finite open coverings of the support of g.
