Exercise 6, § 5

Integration, V, p. 100

a) Let μ\mu be a positive measure on TT. If A⊂TA \subset T is universally measurable and not locally μ\mu-negligible, show that there exists a positive measure ν\nu carried by AA such that ν≠0\nu \neq 0 and ν≤μ\nu \leq \mu. (Take ν=φK⋅μ\nu = \varphi_K \cdot \mu, where KK is a compact subset of AA that is not μ\mu-negligible.)

b) Let MM be a universally measurable subset of TT. In order that a positive measure λ\lambda on TT be carried by MM, it is necessary and sufficient that λ\lambda be alien to every positive measure carried by CM\mathbf{C}M (make use of aa).

c) Deduce from bb) that the measures ρ\rho on TT, such that ∣ρ∣|\rho| is carried by MM, form a band in M(T)\mathscr{M}(T). This band is vaguely closed in M(T)\mathscr{M}(T) if MM is a closed subset of TT (Ch. III, §2, Prop. 6).

d) Show that Lebesgue measure on I=[0,1]I = [0,1] is the vague limit of a sequence of atomic measures carried by a fixed countable set A⊂IA \subset I (cf. Ch. III, §2, Th. 1 and Prop. 13). The band of measures carried by AA is therefore not vaguely closed.
