Exercise 8, § 5

Integration, V, p. 100

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let ν\nu be a positive atomic measure on TT, and let AA be a ν\nu-integrable subset of TT. Show that the set of values of ν(X)\nu(X), as XX runs over the set of ν\nu-integrable subsets of AA, is closed in R\mathbf{R}. (Let MM be the smallest set carrying ν\nu. Assuming A∩MA \cap M infinite and arranging the points of A∩MA \cap M in a sequence (an)(a_n), consider the mapping φ\varphi of the product space {0,1}N\{0,1\}^\mathbf{N} into R\mathbf{R} defined by φ((εn))=∑nεnν({an})\varphi((\varepsilon_n)) = \sum_n \varepsilon_n \nu(\{a_n\}), and show that it is continuous.)

b) Deduce from aa) and Exer. 7 b) that if μ\mu is any positive measure on TT, and AA is a μ\mu-integrable subset of TT, then the set of values of μ(X)\mu(X), as XX runs over the set of μ\mu-integrable subsets of AA, is closed in R\mathbf{R}. Extend this result to the case that μ\mu is any real measure on TT.

c) Deduce from Exer. 7 b) that if μ\mu is a diffuse real measure on TT, then the set of values of μ(X)=μ+(X)−μ−(X)\mu(X) = \mu^+(X) - \mu^-(X), where XX runs over the set of ∣μ∣|\mu|-integrable subsets of TT, is a closed interval of R\mathbf{R} (bounded or not).

d) Give an example of an atomic positive measure ν\nu on a noncompact locally compact space TT, such that the set of values of ν(X)\nu(X), where XX runs over the set of ν\nu-integrable subsets of TT, is not closed (take ν\nu to be such that inf⁡t∈Tν({t})>0\inf_{t \in T} \nu(\{t\}) > 0).
