Let (Tι)ι∈I be any family of compact spaces; for each ι∈I, let μι be a positive measure on Tι, of total mass equal to 1, and let μ be the product measure ⨂ι∈Iμι on T=∏ι∈ITι. For every ι∈I, let fι be a function ⩾0 defined on Tι, μι-integrable and such that ∫fιdμι⩽1; set μι′=fι⋅μι and μ′=⨂ι∈Iμι′ (Ch. III, §4, Exer. 6). Assume that μ′=0.
a) For every finite subset J of I, set TJ=∏ι∈JTι, μJ=⨂ι∈Jμι, μJ′=⨂ι∈Jμι′, fJ(t)=∏ι∈Jfι(prιt), gJ=fJ, μJ′′=μJμJ′ (§ 5, No. 9) and ρ(μJ,μJ′)=μJ′′(TJ)=∫gJdμJ. Show that, for the functions gJ to converge in the quadratic mean to a function in L2(T,μ), with respect to the directed ordered set of finite subsets of I, it is necessary and sufficient that the product of the numbers ρ(μι,μι′) be convergent in R+∗, that is, >0. (For two finite subsets J,L such that J⊂L, evaluate the norm N2(gJ−gL) by means of the ρ(μι,μι′).) Deduce from this that the functions fJ then converge in mean to a function f≥0 such that μ′=f⋅μ.
b) Show that if the product ∏ι∈Iρ(μι,μι′) is zero, then the measures μ and μ′ are alien (consider the set AJ of points t∈T such that gJ(t)>1, and evaluate the measures μ(AJ) and μ′(T−AJ)).
