Exercise 6, § 8

Integration, V, p. 115

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let T be a locally compact space, ν\nu a positive measure on T, I an interval of R\mathbf{R}, μ\mu a positive measure on I. Let A be a subset of the product I×TI \times T, such that: 1° for every x∈Ix \in I, the section A(x)⊂TA(x) \subset T of A at x is ν\nu-measurable; 2° the relation x≤yx \leq y implies A(x)⊂A(y)A(x) \subset A(y). Show that A is (μ⊗ν)(\mu \otimes \nu)-measurable. (Reduce to the case that I and T are compact and μ\mu is diffuse; consider an increasing sequence (xi)0≤i≤n(x_i)_{0 \leq i \leq n} of points of I, x0x_0 and xnx_n being the end-points of I, such that μ([xi,xi+1])≤ε\mu([x_i, x_{i+1}]) \leq \varepsilon for 0≤i≤n−10 \leq i \leq n-1, and form two subsets B, C of I×TI \times T, measurable for λ=μ⊗ν\lambda = \mu \otimes \nu and such that B⊂A⊂CB \subset A \subset C and λ(C−B)≤εν(t)\lambda(C - B) \leq \varepsilon \nu(t).)

b) Deduce from a) that if ff is a numerical function defined on I×TI \times T, such that: 1° for each x∈Ix \in I, t↦f(x,t)t \mapsto f(x, t) is ν\nu-measurable, and 2° for each t∈Tt \in T, x↦f(x,t)x \mapsto f(x, t) is increasing, then ff is (μ⊗ν)(\mu \otimes \nu)-measurable.

c) Let gg be a numerical function defined on I×TI \times T, such that: 1° for each x∈Ix \in I, t↦g(x,t)t \mapsto g(x, t) is ν\nu-measurable; 2° for each t∈Tt \in T, x↦g(x,t)x \mapsto g(x, t) is monotone. Deduce from b) that gg is (μ⊗ν)(\mu \otimes \nu)-measurable. (Let T1⊂TT_1 \subset T be the set of t∈Tt \in T such that the mapping x↦g(x,t)x \mapsto g(x, t) is increasing; show that T1T_1 is ν\nu-measurable. To that end, for every pair (r1,r2)(r_1, r_2) of rational numbers belonging to I such that r1≤r2r_1 \leq r_2, consider the set Dr1,r2D_{r_1, r_2} of points t∈Tt \in T such that g(r1,t)≤g(r2,t)g(r_1, t) \leq g(r_2, t) and express T1T_1 as the intersection of sets Dr1,r2D_{r_1, r_2}.)
