Exercise 12, § 1

Integration, VI, p. 58

Let μ\mu be Lebesgue measure on T=[0,1]T = [0,1], and let FF be a Hilbert space having an orthonormal basis (et)t∈T(e_t)_{t \in T} equipotent to TT.

a) Let ff be the mapping t↦ett \mapsto e_t of TT into FF. Show that ff is scalarly μ\mu-negligible, but is not μ\mu-measurable when FF is equipped with the weak topology σ(F,F′)\sigma(F,F') (nor, a fortiori, when FF is equipped with its original topology).

b) Let AA be a non-measurable set in TT (Ch. IV, §4, Exer. 8); show that the function g=fφAg = f \varphi_A is scalarly μ\mu-negligible, but that the numerical function ∣g∣|g| is not μ\mu-measurable.
