Exercise 17, § 1
Integration, VI, p. 60
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be Lebesgue measure on , the Banach space , its dual. For every , let be the dyadic expansion of ; denote by the sequence , and set .
a) Show that, for , the function belongs to the space (cf. Exer. 16).
b) Show that is measurable for the topology and that, for this topology, there exists a sequence of step functions that converges almost everywhere to .
c) Show that is not measurable for the strong topology on (observe that if ).
d) Show that, in the space (), is not the limit of a sequence of step functions. (Reduce to considering only step functions that are linear combinations (with coefficients in ) of characteristic functions of intervals whose endpoints are of the form ; if is such a step function, show that, in the notations of Exer. 16 b), .)
e) Show that there does not exist any mapping of into , measurable for the strong topology, such that is scalarly negligible. (Observe that, for such a mapping, one would necessarily have ; then obtain a contradiction with the result of d).)
