Exercise 2, § 1

Integration, VIII

Let GG be a locally compact group and Γ\Gamma the compact space obtained by adjoining to GG a point at infinity ω\omega. One extends the law of composition of GG to Γ\Gamma by setting xω=ωx=ωx \omega = \omega x = \omega for every x∈Γx \in \Gamma. To every measure μ\mu on Γ\Gamma there corresponds, on the one hand a bounded measure μ1\mu_1 on GG, on the other a complex number μ({ω})\mu(\{\omega\}). Show that if ∗* (resp. ∗^\widehat{*}) denotes the convolution defined by the multiplication in GG (resp. Γ\Gamma), then (μ∗^ν)1=μ1∗ν1(\mu \widehat{*} \nu)_1 = \mu_1 * \nu_1 and

(μ∗^ν)(ω)=μ(ω)ν1(G)+ν(ω)μ1(G)+μ(ω)ν(ω) (\mu \widehat{*} \nu)(\omega) = \mu(\omega)\nu_1(G) + \nu(\omega)\mu_1(G) + \mu(\omega)\nu(\omega)
for any two measures μ\mu and ν\nu on Γ\Gamma.
