Exercise 13, § 3

Integration, VIII, p. 64

Let rr be a number such that 0<r<10 < r < 1; for every integer n≥1n \geq 1, denote by λn,r\lambda_{n,r} the measure (εrn+ε−rn)/2(\varepsilon_{r^n} + \varepsilon_{-r^n})/2 on R\mathbf{R}, and set μn,r=λ1,r∗λ2,r∗⋯∗λn,r\mu_{n,r} = \lambda_{1,r} * \lambda_{2,r} * \cdots * \lambda_{n,r}.

a) Show that the sequence (μn,r)(\mu_{n,r}) converges vaguely to a measure μr\mu_r on R\mathbf{R}, with support contained in I=[−1,+1]I = [-1, +1] (prove that for every interval U of R\mathbf{R}, the sequence (μn,r(U))(\mu_{n,r}(U)) is convergent).

b) Show that for r<1/2r < 1/2, the measure μr\mu_r is alien to the Lebesgue measure on R\mathbf{R}, but that μ1/2\mu_{1/2} is the measure induced on I by Lebesgue measure.

c) Let ν1/4\nu_{1/4} be the image of μ1/4\mu_{1/4} under the homothety t↦2tt \mapsto 2t in R\mathbf{R}. Show that μ1/4∗ν1/4=μ1/2\mu_{1/4} * \nu_{1/4} = \mu_{1/2}, even though μ1/4\mu_{1/4} and ν1/4\nu_{1/4} are both alien to Lebesgue measure (use Exer. 11 a)).
