Exercise 4, § 3

Integration, VIII, p. 62

Let μ\mu be Lebesgue measure on R\mathbf{R}, and ν\nu Lebesgue measure on [0,+∞[[0, +\infty[. Let x1,x2x_1, x_2 be in R\mathbf{R}. Show that the convolution product ((εx1−εx2)∗ν)∗μ((\varepsilon_{x_1} - \varepsilon_{x_2}) * \nu) * \mu is defined, but that μ\mu and ν\nu are not convolvable. Show that the convolution products ν∗((εx1−εx2)∗μ)\nu * ((\varepsilon_{x_1} - \varepsilon_{x_2}) * \mu) and (ν∗(εx1−εx2))∗μ(\nu * (\varepsilon_{x_1} - \varepsilon_{x_2})) * \mu are defined, but are distinct for x1≠x2x_1 \neq x_2.
