Exercise 5, § 3

Integration, VIII, p. 62

Let GG be a compact group, and μ\mu a positive measure on GG, with support GG, such that μ∗μ=μ\mu * \mu = \mu. Show that μ\mu is the normalized Haar measure of GG. (First show that ∥μ∥=1\| \mu \| = 1. Then, if μ\mu is not the Haar measure of GG, there exists a function f∈K+(G)f \in \mathscr{K}_+(G) such that

∫f(s) dμ(s)≥∫f(st) dμ(s) \int f(s)\ d\mu(s) \geq \int f(st)\ d\mu(s)

for all t∈Gt \in G, and such that ∫f(s) dμ(s)>∫f(st) dμ(s)\int f(s)\ d\mu(s) > \int f(st)\ d\mu(s) for some tt. Show that one then has (μ∗μ)(f)>μ(f)(\mu * \mu)(f) > \mu(f).
