Exercise 6, § 3

Integration, VIII, p. 62

a) Let I=[0,1]I = [0, 1]. Let ff be a continuous function ≥0\geq 0 on R\mathbf{R}, with support contained in [−1,0][-1, 0]. Show that the set of functions γ(s)f∣I (s∈I)\gamma(s)f|I\ (s \in I) has infinite rank in K(I)\mathscr{K}(I).

b) Let f1,…,fnf_1, \ldots, f_n be in K(R)\mathscr{K}(\mathbf{R}). Let MM be the set of measures μ∈M(I)\mu \in \mathscr{M}(I) such that μ(f1)=…=μ(fn)=0\mu(f_1) = \ldots = \mu(f_n) = 0. Show that the set of functions y↦∫f(x+y) dμ(x) (y∈I)y \mapsto \int f(x + y)\ d\mu(x)\ (y \in I), where μ\mu runs over MM, has infinite rank in K(I)\mathscr{K}(I). (Make use of a.)

c) Let g1,…,gpg_1, \ldots, g_p be in K(R)\mathscr{K}(\mathbf{R}). Deduce from b) that there exist μ∈M\mu \in M and ν∈M(I)\nu \in \mathscr{M}(I) such that ν(g1)=…=ν(gp)=0\nu(g_1) = \ldots = \nu(g_p) = 0, (ν∗μ)(f)≠0(\nu * \mu)(f) \neq 0.

d) Deduce from c) that the mapping (μ,ν)↦ν∗μ(\mu, \nu) \mapsto \nu * \mu of M(T)×M(T)\mathscr{M}(T) \times \mathscr{M}(T) into M(T)\mathscr{M}(T) is not vaguely continuous.
