Exercise 9, § 3

Integration, VIII, p. 63

a) Let G be a locally compact group, B a bounded subset of M(G)\mathscr{M}(G), C an equicontinuous subset of C′(G)\mathscr{C}'(G); show that if C′(G)\mathscr{C}'(G) is equipped with the weak topology σ(C′(G),C(G))\sigma(\mathscr{C}'(G), \mathscr{C}(G)), and M(G)\mathscr{M}(G) with the vague topology σ(M(G),K(G))\sigma(\mathscr{M}(G), \mathscr{K}(G)), then the mapping (μ,ν)↦μ∗ν(\mu, \nu) \mapsto \mu * \nu of B×CB \times C into M(G)\mathscr{M}(G) is continuous. (Observe that all of the measures ν∈C\nu \in C have their support in a common compact set, and make use of Ch. III, §4, No. 3, remarks following Prop. 6.)

b) If, in M1(R)\mathscr{M}^1(\mathbf{R}), one sets μn=εn\mu_n = \varepsilon_n, νn=ε−n‾\nu_n = \overline{\varepsilon_{-n}}, the sequences (μn)(\mu_n) and (νn)(\nu_n) tend vaguely to 0 for the weak topology σ(M1(R),K(R))\sigma(\mathscr{M}^1(\mathbf{R}), \mathscr{K}(\mathbf{R})), but the sequence (μn∗νn)(\mu_n * \nu_n) does not tend to 0 for the vague topology.
