Bourbaki

Exercise 1, § 4

Integration, VIII, p. 65

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let G be a locally compact group, β\beta a left Haar measure on G, A a β\beta-measurable subset of G, and ν\nu a nonzero positive measure on G. Assume that sA is locally ν\nu-negligible for every s∈Gs \in G. Show that A is locally β\beta-negligible. (Reduce to the case that A is relatively compact and ν\nu is bounded. Prove that ν\nu and φA⋅β\varphi_A \cdot \beta are convolvable and that ν∗βφA=0\nu * \beta \varphi_A = 0, whence 0=∥ν∗φA⋅β∥=∥ν∥⋅∥φA⋅β∥0 = \| \nu * \varphi_A \cdot \beta \| = \| \nu \| \cdot \| \varphi_A \cdot \beta \|.) Show, on admitting the continuum hypothesis, that this result may fail to hold if A is not assumed to be β\beta-measurable. (Take G=R2G = \mathbf{R}^2, take for ν\nu the Haar measure on the subgroup R×{0}\mathbf{R} \times \{0\}, and apply Exer. 7 c) of Ch. V, §8.)
