Exercise 10, § 4

Integration, VIII, p. 67

Let GG be a locally compact group, β\beta a left Haar measure on GG. For any two β\beta-integrable sets A,BA, B set ρ(A,B)=β(A∪B)−β(A∩B)\rho(A, B) = \beta(A \cup B) - \beta(A \cap B). a) Let AA be a β\beta-integrable set. Show that x↦ρ(xA,A)x \mapsto \rho(xA, A) is a continuous function. b) Let UU be a neighborhood of ee. Show that there exist a compact set AA and a number ε>0\varepsilon > 0 such that ρ(xA,A)<ε\rho(xA, A) < \varepsilon implies x∈Ux \in U. (Take for AA a neighborhood of ee such that A⋅A−1⊂U.A \cdot A^{-1} \subset U .) c) For a subset CC of GG to be relatively compact, it is necessary and sufficient that there exist a β\beta-integrable set AA and a number aa (0<a<2β(A)0 < a < 2\beta(A)) such that x∈Cx \in C implies ρ(xA,A)≤a\rho(xA, A) \leq a.
