a) Let GG be a locally compact group generated by a compact neighborhood of ee. Let φ\varphi be a non-surjective continuous endomorphism of GG belonging to the closure, for the topology of compact convergence, of the group G\mathscr{G} of (bicontinuous) automorphisms of GG. Then lim⁡ψ∈G,ψ→φmod  ψ=0\lim_{\psi \in \mathscr{G}, \psi \to \varphi} \mod \psi = 0. (Let KK be a compact neighborhood of ee that generates GG. Let μ\mu be a left Haar measure on GG. If μ(φ(K))>0\mu(\varphi(K)) > 0, then φ(K)⋅φ(K)−1\varphi(K) \cdot \varphi(K)^{-1} is a neighborhood of ee in GG, therefore φ(G)\varphi(G) is an open subgroup of GG; for ψ∈G\psi \in \mathscr{G} sufficiently near φ\varphi, one has ψ(K)⊂φ(G)\psi(K) \subset \varphi(G), therefore ψ(G)≠G\psi(G) \neq G, which is absurd. Thus μ(φ(K))=0\mu(\varphi(K)) = 0. As ψ∈G\psi \in \mathscr{G} tends to φ\varphi, μ(ψ(K))\mu(\psi(K)) tends to 0.) b) Let GG be a free abelian group, a direct sum G1⊕G2⊕⋯G_1 \oplus G_2 \oplus \cdots, where each GiG_i is isomorphic to Z\mathbf{Z}. Consider GG as being discrete. Let φ\varphi be the non-surjective endomorphism (x1,x2,…)↦(0,x1,x2,…)(x_1, x_2, \ldots) \mapsto (0, x_1, x_2, \ldots) of GG. Then φ\varphi is the limit, for the topology of compact convergence, of automorphisms of GG, and every automorphism of GG has modulus 1.
