Integration, VIII, p. 67
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let G be a locally compact group operating continuously on the left in a Polish locally compact space T. Let β be a left Haar measure on G, ν a quasi-invariant positive measure on T, and χ(s,x) a function >0 on G×T satisfying the conditions of Exer. 13 of Ch. VII, §1. For f∈Lp(T,ν) (1≤p<+∞), set
(γχ,p(s)f)(x)=χ(s−1,x)1/pf(s−1x). a) Show that for every
s∈G,
γχ,p(s) is an isometric endomorphism of
Lp(T,ν). Show that the mapping
s↦γχ,p(s) is a linear representation of
G in
Lp(T,ν) (argue as in §2, No. 5). b) Let
f∈Lp(T,ν), and let
h∈K(G). Show that the function
(x,s)↦f(s−1x)h(s)χ(s−1,x)1/p is
p-th power integrable for
β⊗ν (begin with the case
p=1, and use Lemma 1 of §4, No. 1). Show that if
q is the exponent conjugate to
p, and if
g∈Lq(T,ν), then
f(s−1x)h(s)g(x)χ(s−1,x)1/p is integrable for
β⊗ν (write
h in the form
h1h2 with
h1,h2 in
K(G)) . Then deduce from the Lebesgue–Fubini theorem that, for
f∈Lp(T,ν) and
g∈Lq(T,ν), the function
s↦∫g(x)(γχ,p(s)f)(x)dν(x) is
β-measurable.
c) Show, using Cor. 2 of Prop. 18 of §4, No. 6 and Lemma 1 of Ch. VI, §3, No. 1, that the representation s↦γχ,p(s) of G in Lp(T,ν) is continuous for 1≤p<+∞.
d) Assume in addition that, for every s∈G, the function x↦χ(s−1,x) is bounded. For f∈Lp(T,ν), set
(γχ(s)f)(x)=χ(s−1,x)f(s−1x). Show that
s↦γχ(s) is a continuous representation of G in
Lp(T,ν) for
1≤p<+∞. (One shows, as in the proof of Prop. 9 of §2, No. 5, that
s↦γχ(s) is a representation of G by endomorphisms of
Lp(T,ν). One then observes that if
f∈Lp(T,ν) and
h∈K(G), Lemma 1 of §4, No. 1 shows that
h(s)f(s−1x)χ(s−1,x) is
p-th power integrable for
β⊗ν. The proof is concluded as in c.)
