Exercise 18, § 4
Integration, VIII, p. 69
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Notations and conventions are those of Exer. 15.
a) Let be a bounded measure on G, whose support contains at least two distinct points. Show that there exists a compact set K, and a number k such that , for which for all . (If are two distinct points in the support of , take for K a neighborhood of e sufficiently small that sK cannot intersect both tK and t'K.)
b) Let be a bounded measure on G, whose support contains at least two distinct points. Show that there exists a function , not equivalent to a function , such that is locally almost everywhere for . (Use a), taking f to be equal to on K and to a suitable positive constant on .) If, in addition, the support of is compact, there exists a function having the preceding properties and having compact support.
c) Let be two nonzero, bounded positive measures on G, permutable for convolution, such that the support K of is compact and contains e. Set . Let V be a symmetric compact neighborhood of e containing K, g the function equal to on , and to 0 on V; show that the function is locally almost everywhere in . On the other hand, show that there exists a compact set H such that the function is almost everywhere in .
d) Deduce from c) that if is a bounded positive measure on whose support contains at least two distinct points, there exists a function that belongs to every (), is not equivalent to a function , and is such that is locally almost everywhere, when one makes in addition one of the following hypotheses: is abelian; there is a point such that . (Suitably decompose as a sum of two permutable measures .)
