Integration, VIII, p. 66

Let G be a locally compact group, β\beta a left Haar measure on G, A and B two β\beta-integrable sets such that β(A)≤β(B)\beta(A) \leq \beta(B) and β∗(A−1)<+∞\beta^*(A^{-1}) < +\infty. Show that there exist 1) disjoint sets N, K_1, K_2, ... covering A, with N β\beta-negligible and the K_n compact;

2) disjoint sets N′,K1′,K2′,…N' , K'_1 , K'_2 , \ldots covering B, with the Kn′K'_n compact; 3) elements sn∈Gs_n \in G such that Kn′=snKnK'_n = s_n K_n. (Using the fact that β(xA∩B)\beta(xA \cap B) depends continuously on xx and that

∫β(xA∩B) dβ(x)=β(A−1)β(B), \int \beta(xA \cap B)\, d\beta(x) = \beta(A^{-1})\beta(B),
show that if β(A)≠0\beta(A) \neq 0 then there exists an x∈Gx \in G such that β(xA∩B)≠0.\beta(xA \cap B) \neq 0 .)
