Exercise 13, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 75

Let gg be a Lie algebra and aa and bb two submodules of gg. For every integer i⩾0i \geqslant 0 we define the submodules mi=mi(a,b)m_i = m_i(a, b) and ni=ni(a,b)n_i = n_i(a, b) as follows: m1=b,mi+1=[mi,b],n1=a,ni+1=[ni,b]m_1 = b, m_{i+1} = [m_i, b], n_1 = a, n_{i+1} = [n_i, b]. Show that

[a,mi]⊂ni+1 [a, m_i] \subset n_{i+1}
for i=1,2,…i = 1, 2, \ldots (argue by induction on ii, observing that
mi([a,b],b)=mi(a,b) m_i([a, b], b) = m_i(a, b)
and ni([a,b],b)=ni+1(a,b)n_i([a, b], b) = n_{i+1}(a, b)).
