Exercise 15, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 75

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let aa be a Lie algebra, bb a subalgebra of aa, cc an ideal of bb and zz the centralizer of cc in aa. Then [z,b]⊂z[z, b] \subset z. Deduce that b+zb + z is a subalgebra of aa in which zz is an ideal. (b) Let gg be a Lie algebra, aa a subinvariant subalgebra of gg and bb an ideal of aa. If the centralizer of bb in aa and the centralizer of aa in gg are zero, the centralizer z\mathfrak{z} of b\mathfrak{b} in g\mathfrak{g} is zero. (Let h=a+z\mathfrak{h} = \mathfrak{a} + \mathfrak{z}, which is a subalgebra by (a); a\mathfrak{a} is subinvariant in h\mathfrak{h}; if z≠{0}\mathfrak{z} \neq \{0\}, then a≠b\mathfrak{a} \neq \mathfrak{b}, hence a\mathfrak{a} is an ideal in a′\mathfrak{a}', with a≠a′⊂h\mathfrak{a} \neq \mathfrak{a}' \subset \mathfrak{h}; let a′∈a′a' \in \mathfrak{a}', a′∉aa' \notin \mathfrak{a} and a′=a+za' = a + z, a∈aa \in \mathfrak{a}, z∈zz \in \mathfrak{z}, z≠0z \neq 0; show that [z,a][z, a] is contained in a\mathfrak{a} and commutes with b\mathfrak{b}, whence [z,a]={0}[z, a] = \{0\} giving a contradiction.)

(c) Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra with centre zero, D1\mathfrak{D}_1 the Lie algebra of derivations of g\mathfrak{g}, D2\mathfrak{D}_2 the Lie algebra of derivations of D1\mathfrak{D}_1, ... g\mathfrak{g} is identified with an ideal of D1,D1\mathfrak{D}_1, \mathfrak{D}_1 with an ideal of D2,…\mathfrak{D}_2, \ldots (cf. Exercise 12 (b)). Using (b) and Exercise 12 (b), show that the centralizer of g\mathfrak{g} in Di\mathfrak{D}_i is zero for all ii. (For a sequel to this exercise, cf. § 4, Exercise 15.)
