Exercise 18, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 77

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a complex Hilbert space, YY and ZZ continuous Hermitian operators on g\mathfrak{g} and B=[Z,Y]B = [Z, Y]. Suppose that YY and BB are permutable.

(a) Show that [Z,Yn]=nBYn−1[Z, Y^n] = n B Y^{n-1} (argue by induction on nn).

(b) Let ff be a continuously differentiable function of a real variable. Deduce from (a) that [Z,f(Y)]=Bf′(Y)[Z, f(Y)] = B f'(Y).

(c) Deduce from (b) that B=0B = 0. (Show that, if B≠0B \neq 0, ff can be chosen such that ∥f(Y)∥≤1\|f(Y)\| \leq 1 and ∥Bf′(Y)∥\|B f'(Y)\| is arbitrarily large.)

(d) Let gg be the Lie algebra of continuous operators TT on g\mathfrak{g} such that T∗=−TT^* = -T. Deduce from (c) that the conditions Y∈g,Z∈g,[[Z,Y],Y]=0Y \in g, Z \in g, [[Z, Y], Y] = 0 imply [Z,Y]=0[Z, Y] = 0.
