Exercise 21, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 78

(a) Let KK be a field of characteristic p>0p > 0 and LL a not necessarily associative algebra over KK. Show that the derivations of LL form a Lie pp-algebra with the pp-mapping D↦DpD \mapsto D^p.

(b) Let LL be the algebra K[X]/(Xp)K[X]/(X^p) and ww the pp-algebra of derivations of LL. Let DiD_i (0≤i≤p−10 \leq i \leq p-1) denote the derivation of LL such that Di(X)=XiD_i(X) = X^i. Show that the DiD_i form a basis of ww over KK and that [Di,Dj]=(j−i)Di+j−1[D_i, D_j] = (j - i)D_{i+j-1} if i+j≤pi + j \leq p, [Di,Dj]=0[D_i, D_j] = 0 if i+j>pi + j > p, and Dip=0D_i^p = 0, except for i=1i = 1, in which case D1p=D1D_1^p = D_1.

(c) Show that, if p≥3p \geq 3, the Lie algebra ww only admits the ideals {0}\{0\} and ww. (Using the multiplication table of the DiD_i, show that every non-zero ideal of ww contains a non-zero multiple of Dp−1D_{p-1}.)

(d) Let VkV_k be the subspace of ww with basis the DiD_i of index ≥k\geq k. Show that, if p⩾5p \geqslant 5, VkV_k is identical with the set of Z∈wZ \in w whose centralizer is of dimension ⩾k+1\geqslant k + 1. Deduce that, if p⩾5p \geqslant 5, the automorphism group of ww is solvable.
