Let gg be a finite-dimensional commutative Lie pp-algebra over a perfect field KK of characteristic p>0p > 0.

(a) Show that gg is in a unique way the direct sum of two pp-subalgebras h,th, t such that on hh the pp-mapping is bijective and on tt it is nilpotent (consider the iterations of the pp-mapping on gg; cf. Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 2, no. 2, Lemma 2 and Chapter VII, § 5, Exercise 20 (a)). hh is called the pp-core of gg.

(b) Suppose that KK is algebraically closed. Show that there exists a basis (ei)(e_i) of hh such that eip=eie_i^p = e_i for all ii (consider a pp-subalgebra of hh generated by a single element and show that it contains some xx such that xp=x≠0x^p = x \neq 0; then argue by induction on the dimension of hh). Deduce that the pp-subalgebras of hh are finite in number and are in one-to-one correspondence with the vector subspaces of the vector space over the prime field Fp\mathbf{F}_p generated by the eie_i.

(c) Show that there exists a basis (fij)(f_{ij}) of tt (1⩽i⩽k,1⩽j⩽si1 \leqslant i \leqslant k, 1 \leqslant j \leqslant s_i for all ii) where the sequence of sis_i is decreasing and which is such that f1jp=0f_{1j}^p = 0 for 1⩽j⩽s1,f1jp=fi−1,j1 \leqslant j \leqslant s_1, f_{1j}^p = f_{i-1,j} for 2⩽i⩽k,1⩽j⩽si2 \leqslant i \leqslant k, 1 \leqslant j \leqslant s_i (method of Algebra, Chapter VII, § 5, Exercise 20 (b)).
