Exercise 25, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 81

The formal linear group in n variables over the field K, denoted by GL(n,K)\mathbf{GL}(n, K) (when no confusion can arise), is the formal group of dimension n2n^2

whose group law is defined by fij(u,v)=−δij+∑k=1n(δik+Uik)(δkj+Vkj)f_{ij}(u, v) = -\delta_{ij} + \sum_{k=1}^n (\delta_{ik} + U_{ik})(\delta_{kj} + V_{kj}) (δij\delta_{ij} the Kronecker index; the 3n23n^2 indeterminates of the general definition of Exercise 24 are here denoted by Uij,Vij,WijU_{ij}, V_{ij}, W_{ij} with 2 indices varying from 1 to n). Show that, if Dij=∂/∂UijD_{ij} = \partial / \partial U_{ij}, the left invariant derivations XijX_{ij} such that Xij(e)=Dij(e)X_{ij}^{(e)} = D_{ij}^{(e)} are given by

Xij=(1+Uii)Dij+∑k≠iUkiDkj. X_{ij} = (1 + U_{ii})D_{ij} + \sum_{k \neq i} U_{ki}D_{kj}.

The Lie algebra of GL(n,K)\mathbf{GL}(n, K) is identified with gl(n,K)\mathfrak{gl}(n, K) by identifying XijX_{ij} with the element EijE_{ij} of the canonical basis (use formula (3) of Exercise 24). If K is of characteristic p>0p > 0, Xiip=XiiX_{ii}^p = X_{ii} and Xijp=0X_{ij}^p = 0 for i≠ji \neq j.
