Suppose that K is a field. Let g be a Lie K-algebra, x↦xM a finite-dimensional representation of g, (e1,…,en) a basis of M and (e1∗,…,en∗) the dual basis.
(a) If f is a linear form on ⨂rM, then:
f=1≤i1,…,ir≤n∑f(ei1⊗⋯⊗eir)(ei1∗⊗⋯⊗eir∗).
(b) Let β be a non-degenerate bilinear form on M which is invariant under g. Let (e1′,…,en′) be the basis of M such that β(ei,ej′)=δij. Let f be an invariant linear form on ⨂rM. Deduce from (a) that
1≤i1,…,ir≤n∑f(ei1⊗⋯⊗eir)(ei1′⊗⋯⊗eir′)
is an invariant element of ⨂rM independent of the choice of basis (ei).
(c) Let U be the enveloping algebra of g and U∗ the dual space of U. The adjoint representation of g can be extended to a representation x↦xU of g on U defined by xUu=xu−ux for all u∈U. Hence U∗ has a g-module structure. For an element f of U∗ to be invariant, it is necessary and sufficient that f(uv)=f(vu) for all u,v in U.
(d) Let h be a finite-dimensional ideal of g and γ an invariant bilinear form on g whose restriction to h is non-degenerate. Let (yi)1≤i≤n,(yj′)1≤j≤n be two bases of h such that γ(yi,yj′)=δij. Let r be an integer ≥1. Let f be a linear form on U such that f(uv)=f(vu) for all u,v in U. Deduce from (b) and (c) that
1≤i1,…,ir≤n∑f(yi1yi2⋯yir)yi1′yi2′⋯yir′
is an element of the centre of U independent of the choice of basis (yi). In particular recover the Casimir elements.
(e) Let θ be a permutation of {1,…,r}. Arguing similarly, show that
1≤i1,…,ir≤n∑f(yiθ(1)yiθ(2)⋯yiθ(r))yi1′yi2′⋯yir′
is an element of the centre of U independent of the choice of basis (yi).
