Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 93

Let g be a Lie algebra and C∞g\mathscr{C}^\infty g the intersection of the Cgg\mathscr{C}^g g. (a) The Lie algebra g/C∞gg / \mathscr{C}^\infty g is nilpotent. (b) Show that there exists a nilpotent subalgebra hh of gg such that g=h+C∞gg = h + \mathscr{C}^\infty g. (Argue by induction on dim⁡g\dim g. Suppose that gg is not nilpotent. Let x∈gx \in g be such that I=⋂k(ad x)k(g)≠{0}I = \bigcap_k (\mathrm{ad}\, x)^k(g) \neq \{0\}. Let nn be the union of the kernels of the (ad x)k(\mathrm{ad}\, x)^k. Show that this is a subalgebra of gg and that gg is the direct sum of I and nn. By the induction hypothesis nn is the sum of C∞n\mathscr{C}^\infty n and a nilpotent subalgebra hh. Finally, C∞n⊂C∞g\mathscr{C}^\infty n \subset \mathscr{C}^\infty g and I⊂C∞gI \subset \mathscr{C}^\infty g.

(c) Verify that the following multiplication table defines a (solvable) Lie algebra gg of dimension 5:

[x1,x2]=x5,[x1,x3]=x3,[x1,x4]=−x4,[x3,x4]=x5 [x_1, x_2] = x_5, \quad [x_1, x_3] = x_3, \quad [x_1, x_4] = -x_4, \quad [x_3, x_4] = x_5

and the other [xi,xj][x_i, x_j] are zero. Show that for this Lie algebra

C∞g=Kx3+Kx4+Kx5 \mathscr{C}^\infty g = Kx_3 + Kx_4 + Kx_5

but that there exists no supplementary subalgebra of C∞g\mathscr{C}^\infty g in gg.
