Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let gg be a Lie algebra and σ\sigma an automorphism of gg. (a) Suppose first that KK is algebraically closed; for all λ∈K\lambda \in K let LλL_\lambda be the set of x∈gx \in g which are annihilated by a power of σ−λI\sigma - \lambda I; gg is the direct sum of the LλL_\lambda. Show that [Lλ,Lμ]⊂Lλμ[L_\lambda, L_\mu] \subset L_{\lambda \mu}. (Note that

(σ−λμI)([x,y])=[(σ−λI)x,σy]+[λx,(σ−μI)y]. (\sigma - \lambda \mu I)([x, y]) = [(\sigma - \lambda I)x, \sigma y] + [\lambda x, (\sigma - \mu I)y].
(b) With an arbitrary field KK, suppose that none of the eigenvalues of σ\sigma (in an algebraically closed extension of KK) is a root of unity. Show that gg is nilpotent. (Reduce it to the case where KK is algebraically closed. If λ1,…,λm\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_m are the distinct eigenvalues of σ\sigma, the λiλj,λiλj2,λiλj3,…\lambda_i \lambda_j, \lambda_i \lambda_j^2, \lambda_i \lambda_j^3, \ldots are not all eigenvalues and hence adgx\mathrm{ad}_g x is nilpotent for x∈Lλix \in L_{\lambda_i}. Conclude using Exercise 11 applied to the set of adgx\mathrm{ad}_g x, where xx runs through the union of the LλiL_{\lambda_i}.) (c) With an arbitrary field KK, suppose that σq=I\sigma^q = I, where qq is a prime number and that no eigenvalue of σ\sigma is equal to 1. Show that gg is nilpotent. (Same method as in (b), observing that, if g≠{0}g \neq \{0\}, gg is not equal to the characteristic of KK and that for every ordered pair of eigenvalues λi,λj\lambda_i, \lambda_j of σ\sigma there exists an integer kk such that λiλjk=1\lambda_i \lambda_j^k = 1.)
