(a) Let u,vu, v be two endomorphisms of a vector space EE of finite dimension over an algebraically closed field KK. For every eigenvalue λ\lambda of uu let EλE_\lambda be the subspace of EE consisting of the vectors annihilated by a power of u−λIu - \lambda I. Show that, if (ad u)nv=0(\mathrm{ad}\, u)^n v = 0, the subspaces EλE_\lambda are stable under vv. (b) Deduce from (a) that, if gg is a nilpotent Lie algebra of endomorphisms of EE, EE is the direct sum of subspaces FjF_j (1≤j≤m1 \leq j \leq m) which are stable under gg and such that on each FjF_j the restriction of every element u∈gu \in g can be written λj(u)I+uj\lambda_j(u) I + u_j, where λj(u)∈K\lambda_j(u) \in K and uju_j is nilpotent. (c) If KK is of characteristic 2, E=K2E = K^2 and gg is nilpotent algebra sl(2,K)\mathfrak{sl}(2, K), show that m=1m = 1 and that possibly λ(u+v)≠λ(u)+λ(v)\lambda(u + v) \neq \lambda(u) + \lambda(v) for two elements u,vu, v of gg. (For a sequel to this exercise, cf. § 5, Exercise 12.)
