Exercise 23, § 4

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 97

Let gg be a Lie pp-algebra over a perfect field KK of characteristic p>0p > 0. gg is called pp-unipotent if for all x∈gx \in g there exists mm such that xpm=0x^{p^m} = 0.

(a) Show that every pp-unipotent Lie pp-algebra is nilpotent.

(b) Suppose that gg is nilpotent and let hh denote the pp-core of the centre of gg (§1§ 1, Exercise 23 (a)). Show that g/hg/h is pp-unipotent.

(c) Let gg be the nilpotent Lie pp-algebra with a basis of three elements e1,e2,e3e_1, e_2, e_3 such that [e1,e2]=[e1,e3]=0, [e2,e3]=e1, e1p=e1, e2p=e3p=0[e_1, e_2] = [e_1, e_3] = 0,\ [e_2, e_3] = e_1,\ e_1^p = e_1,\ e_2^p = e_3^p = 0. Then h=Ke1h = K e_1, but gg is not the direct sum of hh and a pp-unipotent pp-subalgebra.

(d) If gg is pp-unipotent, show that in the restricted enveloping algebra of gg the two-sided ideal generated by gg is nilpotent. (Argue by induction on the dimension of gg.)
