Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 91

(a) Let gg be a nilpotent Lie algebra, zz its centre and bb a non-zero ideal of gg. Show that z∩b≠{0}z \cap b \neq \{0\}. (Consider bb as a gg-module by means of the adjoint representation.) (b) If in a Lie algebra gg an ideal bb is contained in Ci+1g\mathscr{C}_{i+1} g but not in Cig\mathscr{C}_i g, show that the ideals b∩Ckgb \cap \mathscr{C}_k g are all distinct for 0≤k≤i+10 \leq k \leq i + 1. (Apply (a).)
