Exercise 4, § 4

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 91

Let gg be a nilpotent Lie algebra. (a) Every subalgebra of gg is subinvariant. (Use Proposition 3.) (b) Let bb be a vector subspace of gg such that b+Dg=gb + \mathscr{D}g = g. Show that the subalgebra of gg generated by bb is gg. (Apply (a) to this subalgebra. Reduce it thus to the case where bb is an ideal of gg and use Proposition 4 of § 1.) Deduce that the minimum number of generators of gg is dim⁡g/Dg\dim g / \mathscr{D}g.
