(a) Let V be a finite-dimensional vector space over K, g a Lie algebra of nilpotent endomorphisms of V and (Vr)0≤r<n a decreasing sequence of vector subspaces of V, with V0=V,Vn={0} and g(Vr)⊂Vr+1 for 0≤r<n. Show by induction on i that (Dig)(Vr)⊂Vr+2i. If dimV≥2i, the subspace of elements of V annihilated by Dig is of dimension ≥2i. If dimV≤2i, Dig={0}.
(b) Let g be a nilpotent Lie algebra and i an integer ≥0. If dimDig>2i+1 the centre of Dig is of dimension ≥2i. If dimDig≤2i+1, Dig is commutative. (Apply (a) to the restrictions to Dig of the adg x,x∈g.)
(c) Let g be a nilpotent Lie algebra and i an integer ≥0. If Dig is not commutative, Dig/Di+1g is of dimension ≥2i+1. (Reduce it, by passing to the quotient, to the case where dimDi+1g=1 and use (b).)
