Exercise 8, § 4

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 92

Let gg be a Lie algebra, mm an ideal of codimension 1, xx an element of gg not belonging to mm and z∈gz \in g.

(a) Show that the linear mapping DD which reduce to 0 on mm and maps xx to zz is a derivation if zz belongs to the centralizer aa of mm in gg.

(b) Let qq be the largest integer such that a⊂Cqga \subset \mathscr{C}^q g. Show that if further z∉Cq+1gz \notin \mathscr{C}^{q+1} g, DD is not an inner derivation of gg.

(c) Deduce from (a) and (b) and Exercise 7 (c) that if gg is a nilpotent Lie algebra of dimension >1> 1, the vector space of inner derivations of gg is of co-dimension ≥2\geq 2 in the space of all derivations of gg.
