(a) Let g0g_0 be a 3-dimensional solvable real Lie algebra such that Lg0\mathscr{L}g_0 is commutative and 2-dimensional. Let gg be the algebra derived from g0g_0 by extending the base field from R\mathbf{R} to C\mathbf{C}. For x∈gx \in g, let uxu_x be the restriction of adgx\mathrm{ad}_g x to Dg\mathscr{D}g. Show that the eigenvalues of uxu_x either have the same absolute value or are linearly dependent over R\mathbf{R}. (We have x=λy+zx = \lambda y + z with z∈Dgz \in \mathscr{D}g, y∈g0y \in g_0, λ∈C\lambda \in \mathbf{C} and hence ux=λuyu_x = \lambda u_y. Now uyu_y is the C\mathbf{C}-linear extension to Dg\mathscr{D}g of an R\mathbf{R}-linear endomorphism of Dg0\mathscr{D}g_0.)

(b) Show that there exists a 3-dimensional solvable complex Lie algebra gg, with Dg\mathscr{D}g commutative and 2-dimensional, and an element xx of gg such that the restriction of adgx\mathrm{ad}_g x to Dg\mathscr{D}g has eigenvalues which neither have the same absolute value nor are linearly dependent over R\mathbf{R}. (Construct gg as a semi-direct product of a 1-dimensional algebra and a 2-dimensional commutative algebra.)

(c) Show that the algebra constructed in (b) cannot be derived from a real Lie algebra by extending the base field from R\mathbf{R} to C\mathbf{C}.
