Let $g$ be a Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field, $r$ its radical and $\rho$ a finite-dimensional simple representation of $g$. Then $\rho(z)$ is scalar for $z \in r$. (Reduce it to the case where $g$ is reductive. In this case, $r$ is the centre of $g$.)
