Exercise 9, § 6
Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 103
For a Lie algebra g to be reductive, it is necessary and sufficient that its centre c be equal to its largest nilpotent ideal. (If the condition holds, let r be the radical of g; Dr is contained in the centre of r, hence r is nilpotent and hence r = c.)
