Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 109

Let gg be a Lie algebra and UU its enveloping algebra.

(a) Show that for all u∈Uu \in U (u≠0u \neq 0) there exists a finite-dimensional representation π\pi of UU such that π(u)≠0\pi(u) \neq 0. (Use Exercise 2 and Exercise 5 (b) of § 3.)

(b) Deduce from (a) that if gg is semi-simple there exists an infinity of inequivalent finite-dimensional simple representations of gg. (Let ρ1,…,ρn\rho_1, \ldots, \rho_n be finite-dimensional simple representations of gg, N1,…,NnN_1, \ldots, N_n the annihilators of the corresponding U-modules and N=⋂i=1nNiN = \bigcap_{i=1}^n N_i. Show that NN is of finite co-dimension in U. Let n∈Nn \in \mathbf{N}, n≠0n \neq 0. Apply (a) to nn.)
