Exercise 5, § 7

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, I, 110

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let K be a field of characteristic p>0p > 0, gg a Lie algebra of finite dimension nn over K and U the enveloping algebra of gg.

(a) A p-polynomial (in one indeterminate) over K is any polynomial in K[X]K[X] whose only terms ≠0\neq 0 are of degree a power of pp. Show that for every polynomial f(X)≠0f(X) \neq 0 in K[X]K[X] there exists g(X)∈K[X]g(X) \in K[X] such that f(X)g(X)f(X)g(X) is a pp-polynomial (consider the remainders in Euclidean division of the XpkX^{p^k} by f(X)f(X)).

(b) Show that for every element z∈gz \in g there exists a non-zero polynomial f(X)∈K[X]f(X) \in K[X] such that f(z)f(z) belongs to the centre C of U. (Consider the minimal polynomial of the endomorphism ad⁡z\operatorname{ad} z and apply (a) to this polynomial, and also formula (1) of Exercise 19 of § 1.)

(c) Let (ei)1≤i≤n(e_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} be a basis of gg. For each ii let fi≠0f_i \neq 0 be a polynomial in K[X]K[X] such that fi(ei)∈Cf_i(e_i) \in C; let did_i be its degree and L the two-sided ideal of U generated by the yi=fi(ei)y_i = f_i(e_i). Show that the classes mod. L of the elements e1α1…enαne_1^{\alpha_1} \ldots e_n^{\alpha_n}, where 0≤αi<di0 \leq \alpha_i < d_i form a basis of U/LU/L.

(d) Show that gg admits a finite-dimensional faithful linear representation (choose the fif_i so that di>1d_i > 1 for all ii).

(e) Show that if g≠{0}g \neq \{0\} there exists a non-semi-simple finite-dimensional linear representation of gg. (Assuming that the fif_i are of degrees di>1d_i > 1, replace the fif_i by fi2f_i^2 in the definition of L and note that there then exist nilpotent elements ≠0\neq 0 in the centre of U/LU/L and hence that U/LU/L is not semi-simple.)
