Exercise 12, § 1

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 180

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Suppose that K is a field of characteristic p>0p > 0. (a) Let gg be a Lie pp-algebra (Chapter I, § 1, Exercise 20) and let U~\tilde{U} be its

† The exercise in question assumes that K is a field, but nothing is lost if this hypothesis is suppressed.

restricted enveloping bigebra (Chapter I, § 2, Exercise 6). Show that there exists on U~\tilde{U} one and only one bigebra structure which is compatible with its algebra structure and for which the elements of gg are primitive. Show that U~\tilde{U} is cocommutative and that P(U~)=gP(\tilde{U}) = g.

(b) If nn is an integer ⩾0\geqslant 0, let U~n\tilde{U}_n denote the vector subspace of U~\tilde{U} generated by the products x1…xnx_1 \ldots x_n where xi∈gx_i \in g for all ii. Show that (U~n)n⩾0(\tilde{U}_n)_{n \geqslant 0} is a filtration of U~\tilde{U} compatible with its bigebra structure.

(c) Let EE be a bigebra and let g=P(E)g = P(E) be the Lie algebra of its primitive elements. The mapping x↦xpx \mapsto x^p leaves gg stable and gives gg a Lie pp-algebra structure. Show that the canonical injection g→Eg \to E can be extended uniquely to a bigebra morphism U~→E\tilde{U} \to E and that this morphism is injective (use the fact that, if (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} is a basis of gg with a total ordering, the monomials ∏xini\prod x_i^{n_i} (0⩽ni<p)(0 \leqslant n_i < p) form a basis of UU (loc. cit.) and argue as in the proof of Lemma 2).
