Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 181

Let gg be a free Lie algebra with basic family (x1,…,xn,…)(x_1, \ldots, x_n, \ldots). Let gng_n denote the subalgebra of gg generated by x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n and let bnb_n denote the smallest ideal of gng_n containing xnx_n.

(a) Show that bnb_n is the submodule of gng_n generated by the

(ad⁡(xi1)∘⋯∘ad⁡(xik))(xn), (\operatorname{ad}(x_{i_1}) \circ \cdots \circ \operatorname{ad}(x_{i_k}))(x_n),
where k⩾0k \geqslant 0 and ih⩽ni_h \leqslant n for all hh.

(b) Show that gn=gn−1⊕bng_n = g_{n-1} \oplus b_n; deduce that gg is the direct sum of the bnb_n for n⩾1n \geqslant 1.

(c) Show, using (a) and (b), that the K-module gg is generated by the elements [xi1,[xi2,…,[xik−1,xik]…]][x_{i_1}, [x_{i_2}, \ldots, [x_{i_{k-1}}, x_{i_k}] \ldots]], where k⩾0k \geqslant 0 and ih⩽iki_h \leqslant i_k for h<kh < k.
