Exercise 14, § 2

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 185

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Suppose that KK is a field. Let XX be a set and x,yx, y two elements of L(X)L(X) which are linearly independent over KK. Show that the family (x,y)(x, y) is free in the Lie algebra L(X)L(X). (Let xpx_p (resp. yqy_q) be the non-zero homogeneous component of xx (resp. yy) of highest degree. Adding if necessary a multiple of yy to xx, we can assume that xpx_p and yqy_q are linearly independent. The subalgebra of L(X)L(X) generated by xpx_p and yqy_q is graded and hence free, cf. Exercise 13. Deduce that (xp,yq)(x_p, y_q) is a free family and pass from this to (x,y)(x, y).)
