Exercise 15, § 2

Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, II, 185

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let X={x,y}X = \{x, y\} be a set with two elements and let σ\sigma be an automorphism of the Lie algebra L(X)L(X). Show that, if KK is a field, σ\sigma preserves the graduation of L(X)L(X) (apply Exercise 14 to the non-zero homogeneous components of σ(x)\sigma(x) and σ(y)\sigma(y) of highest degree); deduce an isomorphism of Aut(L(X))\mathrm{Aut}(L(X)) onto GL(2,K)\mathbf{GL}(2, K). Extend these results to the case where the ring KK has no nilpotent element ≠0\neq 0. When KK contains an element ε≠0\varepsilon \neq 0 of zero square, show that x↦x, y↦y+ε[x,y]x \mapsto x, \ y \mapsto y + \varepsilon[x, y] can be extended to an automorphism of L(X)L(X) which does not preserve the graduation of L(X)L(X).
